Today’s Theme: ⛪ THE VEIL
“Behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.”
TEXT: MATTHEW 27:51
MESSAGE🇳🇬
During the time of Jesus, the holy temple in Jerusalem was the centre of Jewish religious life. Hebrews 9:1-9 tells us that in the temple, a veil separated the Holy of Holies-the earthly dwelling place of God’s presence -from the rest of the temple where men dwelt. This signifies that man was separated from God by sin (Isaiah 59: 1-2). Only the High Priest was permitted to pass beyond this veil once each year (Exodus 3: 10, Hebrews 9:7) to enter God’s presence for all of Israel and make atonement for their sins (Leviticus 16). And Jesus is the perfect High Priest in our new covenant, according to Hebrews 10: 19-21.
“Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus. By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us through the veil, that is to say, his flesh. And having an high priest over the house of God”
The veil was a thickness of man’s hand embroidered with figures of cherubim like those Ezekiel saw guarding God’s temple (EZEKIEL 10: 1, 8). The purpose of the veil was to keep people out of the Holy of Holies (Exodus 26: 31-35; Hebrews 10: 19-22). The veil was also a picture of death whereby we enter the presence of God because of sins, the veil was torn at Jesus’ death from top to bottom. The Bible states clearly that when we turn to the Lord the veil is taken away
(2 Corinthians 3:16).
Wearing a veil (also unknown as head covering in our time) is seen as a sign of humility before God, as well as a reminder of the bridal relationship between Christ and the Church (1 Corinthians 11: 4-15). The veil in the temple was a representation of the boundary between earth and heaven.
The profound significance of the tearing of the veil is explained in glorious detail in Hebrews chapter 10. The thick veil was fashioned from blue, purpose and scarlet material and fine twisted linen. The things of the temple were a shadow of things to come, and they all ultimately point us to Jesus Christ. He was the veil to the Holy of Holies, and through His death the faithful now have free access to God. Christ Himself is the only way to the Father (John 14:6). Jesus Christ through His death, has removed the barriers between God and man, and now we may approach Him with confidence and boldness (Hebrews 4:14-16). Our sins stand in the way, keeping us from God’s glory (2 Corinthians 3:16). The Bible re-affirms that the veil is done away in Christ (2 Corinthians 3:14c)
No mean miracle was wrought in the rending of so strong and thick a veil; but it was not intended merely as a display of power—many lessons were herein taught us. The old law of ordinances was put away, and like a worn-out vesture, rent and laid aside. When Jesus died, the veil was torn, and God moved out of that place never again to dwell in a temple made with human hands (Acts 17:24), the sacrifices were all finished, because all was fulfilled in him, and therefore the place of their presentation was marked with an evident token of decay.
That rent also revealed all the hidden things of the old dispensation:
the mercy-seat could now be seen, and the glory of God gleamed forth above it.
By the death of our Lord Jesus, we have a clear revelation of God, for he was “not as Moses, who put a veil over his face.” Life and immortality are now brought to light, and things which have been hidden since the foundation of the world are manifest in him. The annual ceremony of atonement was thus abolished. The atoning blood which was once every year sprinkled within the veil, was now offered once for all by the great High Priest, and therefore the place of the symbolical rite was broken up. No blood of bullocks or of lambs is needed now, for Jesus has entered within the veil with his own blood. Hence access to God is now permitted, and is the privilege of every believer in Christ Jesus. There is no small space laid open through which we may peer at the mercy-seat, but the rent reaches from the top to the bottom. We may come with boldness to the throne of the heavenly grace. Shall we err if we say that the opening of the Holy of Holies in this marvelous manner by our Lord’s expiring cry was the type of the opening of the gates of paradise to all the saints by virtue of the Passion? Our bleeding Lord hath the key of heaven; he opens and no man shuts (REVELATION 3:7); let us enter in with him into the heavenly places, and sit with him there till our common enemies shall be made our footstools (HEBREWS 10: 13, PSALM 110:1).
