Zeal means persistent, fervent, devotion to a cause. In this case, it means devotion to a good cause. There are good causes and there are bad causes of actions. Our concern here is devotion to good works. The Lord says be zealous therefore and repent. To be zealous hereby means, be sincere, be devoted, be persistent in your love for God and things of the kingdom.If you would see souls converted, if you would hear the cry that “the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord” (Daniel 7: 18,27; Rev. 11:15); if you would place crowns upon the head of the Saviour, and his throne lifted high, then be filled with zeal.Be fervent in your spirit while serving the Lord (Rom 12:11). For under God, the way of the world’s conversion must be by the zeal of the church. Every grace shall do exploits, but this shall be first; prudence, knowledge, patience, and courage will follow in their places, but zeal must lead the van. It is not the extent of your knowledge, though that is useful; it is not the extent of your talent, though that is not to be despised; it is your zeal that shall do great exploits. Prophet Isaiah declared that the zeal of the Lord of host shall perform the counsel of the Lord (Isaiah 37:32).This zeal is the fruit of the Holy Spirit: it draws its vital force from the continued operations of the Holy Ghost in the soul. If our inner life dwindles, if our heart beats slowly before God, we shall not know zeal; but if all be strong and vigorous within, then we cannot but feel a loving anxiety to see the kingdom of Christ come, and his will done on earth, even as it is in heaven.A deep sense of gratitude will nourish Christian zeal. Looking to the hole of the pit whence we were dig, we find abundant reason why we should spend and be spent for God. And zeal is also stimulated by the thought of the eternal future.It looks with tearful eyes down to the flames of hell, and it cannot slumber: it looks up with anxious gaze to the glories of heaven, and it cannot but bestir itself. It feels that time is short compared with the work to be done, and therefore it devotes all that it has to the cause of its Lord. And it is ever strengthened by the remembrance of Christ’s example. He was clothed with zeal as with a cloak (Isaiah 59:17). How swift the chariot-wheels of duty went with him! He knew no loitering by the way. Let us prove that we are his disciples by manifesting the same spirit of zeal. So, our theme today suggests, beware of vain pursuit. Be careful of following after something which will not add value to your life in eternity.“Vanity of vanities saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). The Hebrew word translated vanity as “meaningless”, “emptiness” or “futility”. This preacher is Solomon and he is assuring us that after exploring the world. He has found out that, it amounts to nothing without Christ. It is pointless to chase after worldly things because they disappear with our last breath.Romans 8: 20 says “For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope”.Here we have two great lessons—what to deprecate and what to supplicate. The happiest state of a Christian is the holiest state. As there is the most heat nearest to the sun, so there is the most happiness nearest to Christ. No Christian enjoys comfort when his eyes are fixed on vanity—he finds no satisfaction unless his soul is quickened in the ways of God. The world may win happiness elsewhere, but he cannot. I do not blame ungodly men for rushing to their pleasures. Why should I? Let them have their fill. That is all they have to enjoy. A converted wife who despaired of her husband was always very kind to him, for she said, “I fear that this is the only world in which he will be happy, and therefore I have made up my mind to make him as happy as I can in it.” Christians must seek their delights in a higher sphere than the insipid frivolities or sinful enjoyments of the world. Vain pursuits are dangerous to renewed souls. We have heard of a philosopher who, while he looked up to the stars, fell into a pit; but how deeply do they fall who look down. Their fall is fatal. No Christian is safe when his soul is slothful, and his God is far from him. Beloved, beware of vanity. May God help you to stand on his promises in Jesus’ name, Amen.DANGER OF VANITYOnce vanity enters our personal life, it brings with it pride, jealousy, envy, strife, haughtiness, and many other negative things which leads to destruction.Vanity devalues what is important in our lives and puffs up what is trivial.Proverbs 16:18 warns us that “pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before fall” but vanity rarely listens to warnings. It could be considered as a hard covering that provides protection. The Armour of God or God’s Armour represents the defense we must take in our spiritual lives. The Bible tells us that we are fighting a war against Satan, who seeks to destroy us. Therefore, we must take action and put on God’s Armour. As Christians, it is important for us to understand the severity of this battle.In considering the case of David and Goliath, we can see how frail and uncertain life is, even when a man thinks himself best fortified, how quickly, how easily, and by how small a matter, the passage may be opened for life to go out, and death to enter! Let not the strong man glory in his strength, nor the armed man in his armour. God resists the proud, and pours contempt on those who defy him and his people. No one ever hardened his heart against God and prospered.Beloved, how often is the Christian foiled through an evil heart of unbelief!Certain things I can imagine the Lord for victory against the Philistine. God disarmed him spiritually because he defies the Lord. Hear him;“And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day: give me a man, that we may fight together” (1 Samuel 17: 10).God removed the hedge around the Philistine, which allowed the stone of deliverance of the children of Israel to penetrate him. God belittled the Philistine (Goliath) before David, God’s instrument of victory for the children of Israel.So, David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.(1 Samuel 17:50). For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people”Text: 2 Corinthians 6:16MESSAGE:💚What a sweet title? “My people!” What a cheering revelation? “Their God!” How much of meaning is attached in those two words? “My people!”. In 2 Chronicles 7: 14, when the Almighty wanted to show his mercy unto the generation of David, His beloved, with his sure mercies, after effected a glorious tabernacle to God through his son Solomon, He said, “If my people…” There is something about God’s People. God’s People are special people. They are peculiar people. They are Royal Priests. (1 Peter 2:9). In Isaiah 65: 22 the Lord says “…My People, and My elect shall long enjoy the works of their hands”. God’s people are the seed of the blessed of the lord. (Isaiah 65:23). God’s People are His elect.The whole world is God’s (Psalm 24;1); the heaven, even the heaven of heavens is the Lord’s, and he reigns among the children of men; but of those whom he hath chosen, whom he hath purchased to himself, he saith what he saith not of others, “My people.” In this word there is the idea of proprietorship. In a special manner “the Lord’s portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.” (Deut. 32:9)All the nations upon earth are his; the whole world is in his power; yet are his people, his chosen, more especially his possession; for he has done more for them than others; he has bought them with his blood; he has brought them nigh to himself; he has set his great heart upon them; he has loved them with an everlasting love, a love which many waters cannot quench, and which the revolutions of time shall never suffice in the least degree to diminish. Dear friends, can you, by faith, see yourselves in that number? Can you look up to heaven and say, “My Lord and my God (John 20:28): mine by that sweet relationship which entitles me to call thee Father; mine by that hallowed fellowship which I delight to hold with thee when thou art pleased to manifest thyself unto me as thou dost not unto the world?” Can you read the Book of life, and find there the indentures (legal agreement, contracts, or documents) of thy salvation? Can thou read thy title writ in precious blood? Can you, by humble faith, lay hold of Jesus’ garments, and say, “My Christ”? If you can, then God saith of thee, and of others like thee, “My people;” for, if God be your God, and Christ your Christ, the Lord has a special, peculiar favour to you; you are the object of his choice, accepted in His Beloved Son. And you will long enjoy the works of your hand by His divine providence (Isaiah 65: 22c). Rebellion is act of violent or open resistance to an established government or ruler. The Old Testament used the Hebrew word meri that translates to the English word rebellion. The root of this word, mara, means to be or cause to be bitter or unpleasant. It is also translated most often as change, disobedient, disobey, provoke, rebellious, and rebel. In the New Testament, similar words for rebellion are disobedience or sedition, both of which refer to rebellion against or undermining authority. Rebellion started from the beginning of creation when Adam and Eve did not keep God’s instruction (Genesis 3: 6). In 1 Samuel 15:23, God said rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.How are rebellious people? Rebellious people are those who resists or defies rules. Rebellious people are people with death conscience.For a sinner to go to God’s house and pretend to pray to him and praise him argues a brazen-facedness of the worst kind!Hear the charge of the Lord to the rebellious house of Israel.At first the Lord said, they are impudent (not showing due respect to any other person, insolent) (Ezekiel 3:7).Alas! since the day of my new birth, we have doubted my Lord to his face, murmured unblushingly in his presence, worshipped before him in a slovenly manner, and sinned without bewailing ourselves concerning it. “If our forehead were not as an adamant, harder than flint, we should have far more holy fear, and a far deeper contrition of spirit; woe is me; I am one of the impudent houses of Israel” (Isaiah 6:1; Ezekiel 3:7-9).The second charge is hardheartedness (heartless, pitiless) (Ezekiel 3: 7), and we must not venture to plead innocent here. Once we had nothing but a heart of stone, and although through grace we now have new and fleshy hearts, much of our former obduracy (obduracy means stubbornly persistence in wrongdoing, hardened in feelings) remains.We are not affected by the death of Jesus as we ought to be; neither we moved by the ruin of our fellow men, the wickedness of the times, the chastisement of our heavenly Father, and our own failures, as we should be.O that our heart would melt at the recital of our Saviour’s sufferings and death. Would to God we were rid of this nether millstone within us, our hateful bodies of death. (Deuteronomy 24: 6)Blessed be the name of the Lord, the disease is not incurable, the Saviour’s precious blood is the universal solvent, and me, even me, it will effectually soften, till my heart melts as wax before the fire. Hope is a desire with expectation of obtaining something. Hope is the future certainty that brings joy, peace and patience to the Christian in the now. Hope is a confident belief on the word of God that what God has promised will come to pass. Whatever your special need may be, you may readily find some promises in the Bible suited to it. And that is where your hope lies. Are you faint and feeble because your way is rough and you are weary?Here is the promise, “He giveth power to the faint.” (Isaiah 40: 29)When you read such a promise, take it back to the great Promiser, and ask him to fulfil his own word. Are you seeking after Christ, and thirsting for closer communion with him? This promise shines like a star upon you,“Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6) Take that promise to the throne continually; do not plead anything else, but go to God over and over again with this, “Lord, thou hast said it, do as thou hast said.” (Number 23:19)Are you distressed because of sin, and burdened with the heavy load of your iniquities?Listen to these words, “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions, and will no longer remember thy sins.” (Isaiah 43:25)You have no merit of your own to plead why he should pardon you, but plead his written engagements and he will perform them. Are you afraid lest you should not be able to hold on to the end, lest, after having thought yourself a child of God, you should prove a castaway? If that is your state, take this word of grace to the throne and plead it: “The mountains may depart, and the hills may be removed, but the covenant of my love shall not depart from thee.” (Isaiah 54:10)If you have lost the sweet sense of the Saviour’s presence, and are seeking him with a sorrowful heart, remember the promises:“Return unto me, and I will return unto you;” (Zechariah 1:3),“For a small moment have I forsaken thee, but with great mercies will I gather thee.” (Isaiah 54:7)Bind your faith upon God’s own word, and whatever your fears or wants, refer to the Bank of Faith with your Father’s note at hand, saying,“Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.” (Psalm 119:49).Beloved, the reasons for our hope are God’s promises and covenant concerning our lives on the pages of the scriptures.
